baked sweet potato fries

Fries find their way to all age groups. In my house, my kid who is 2 years old to my father-in law who is 81 years old, all love fries. Of course that makes an onus on me to make the fries the most healthiest way that can be enjoyed with this vast age band in my house. But it’s a charm to see the grandfather and the grandson both enjoying the fries with the same enthusiasm. I think at whatever age we are at, the child inside us always lives.

So let’s got to the facts first, these sweet potato fries are crispy, healthy and tasty. They are baked. Yes you heard it right, they are crispy and baked. I have a slight garlicky taste as due to the seasoning. But honestly, you can change the seasoning as per your liking and if you do not like any seasoning, they taste amazing with simple salt and pepper as well.

Step-by-step process with photos

Peel two sweet potatoes and cut them lengthwise. I would suggest do not cut them too thick as typically fries do not taste very good when they are too thick. They somewhat taste like wedges. But they are not as thick as wedges so basically they are neither wedges nor fries and they happen to be somewhere in between. So nevertheless, long story short is, please cut the sweet potato of the thickness of fries which would be about a cm thick (as shown in the below image on the left). Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper (as shown in the below figure on the right).

Make sure the fries are well displaced. Meaning they should not be overlapping one another.

Now take about a tablespoon of cornflour and coat the sweet potatoes nicely in cornflour (image below on left). On this drizzle some olive oil. Around a tablespoon of olive oil and mix well (image below on right).

Bake them for 10 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees celsius. After 10 minutes, flip the fries mid-way, making sure they roast from all the sides. And again bake them at 180 degrees celsius for 10 minutes.

The fries look like this after about 20 minutes in the oven (image below on left). Now take one teaspoon of seasoning in a bowl, put the fries, and mix them well so that the seasoning coates well on the fries. It is this seasoning that will give a different taste to the fries. There are many options for seasoning it could be the italian seasoning, or some oregano and paprika if you like it slightly spicy or simple salt and pepper. The sweet potatoes have an amazing taste to themselves, so if you like the fries without any seasoning, please go ahead just enjoy them as it is.

Garnish the baked sweet potato fries with some parsley and there you go. A healthy guilt free snack for all age groups to enjoy.

Tips for making amazing Sweet Potato fries which are so healthy.

  • Fresh: Please use fresh sweet potatoes.
  • Soaking In water: You can also cut them and and soak them in cold salted water for about 20 minutes before following the above process. Once soaked, strain them and wipe them nicely with a kitchen towel. The last thing that we would want is to have water on the fires while coating them with corn flour. As the corn flour will stick and make lumps and not coat the fries evenly. This way the salt goes in the potatoes, and add that little extra taste to them. But I personally do not follow this method as I feel, this changes the taste of sweet potato slightly. By doing this way, we do not have an option of having the fires without any seasoning as some amount of salt is already in the sweet potato by virtue of soaking in salted water.
  • Garnish: I here have garnished with some fresh parsley, but there are many things to garnish with. You could use, fresh basil, coriander, freshly cut chives and fresh oregano. I personally feel the dry seasoning does not taste that well with these fries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my sweet potato fries be crunchy/ crispy?

The secret to crispy fries is that they need room while baking. Do not cramp them up on a baking sheet as they will lose their crunchiness. Also, the fies should not have water on them. So make sure to wipe the fries with a kitchen towel before lining them on a parchment paper.

Are sweet potatoes more healthy than normal potatoes?

The sweet potato might be slightly high on the calories part of it as compares to normal potatoes. But it is very very rich in Vitamin A. It also has low sodium than the normal potatoes. So I guess, if you are on a weight loss, and want to eat potato thaen sweet potato will be a better option as it gives you with a lot more vitamins, much less sodium as compared to the regular potatoes.

Do you peel the sweet potatoes?

The answer to this question is entirely personal choice. I generally make these fries for my son who is 2.5 years old. So he typically does not like the peel so I peel and make these fries. But if your choice of taste demands fries with the peel, please go ahead. The fries will still be as amazing as without the peel. Just make sure to use fresh sweet potato while making it with peel, as the last thing you would want is the fries to so soggy or not taste as fresh.
