I never really used to make Pasta at home, always relied on the store bought packet. But when I first made pasta for my son, I wondered is it really what they say on the packet under the ingredients? It is then my journey of experimentations and making my own pasta at home started.

Being an Indian, Chapati is a staple diet mostly eaten everyday. When the thought of making pasta at home struck me I thought to myself, “What a cumbersome task it might be”? When my experimentations started making a success, I cracked the perfect recipe to make Homemade Pasta. And honestly, it takes lesser time than making a Chapati.

The recipe is very basic and simple, all you need is flour, olive oil, salt and egg. Of course there are various substitutions and additions that you can do to the recipe, but the basic ingredients always remain the same.

Variations & Substitutions to Homemade Pasta

  • Flour: All purpose flour is mostly used. But for health reasons I use Whole Wheat Flour. You could even use a combination of All Purpose Flour and Whole Wheat Flour. Or even a combination of oats flour, wheat flour and a very small quantity of all purpose flour comes out very well.
  • Flavors: Pasta is so versatile that you can add so many flavors to the dough and make it so flavorful. Flavors that can be added are spinach, tomatoes, multiseed or even multi-grain.

Step – by – Step Process With Pictures

1. Dough

In a bowl, add some flour, and salt and mix it well. Make a well and add olive oil. Break an egg, and start mixing with a fork.

Now start kneading it with hand into a stiff dough. If needed add a slight splash of water. Once kneaded, cover it with clean wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.

How long does the Homemade Pasta last?

You could make it fresh. Or if you decide to make it in bulk then you can dry the extra one and keep it in an airtight container and it would be good for a week at least.

How to Make Fresh Pasta?

Once you have shaped the pasta into the desired shape, you could instantly put it in boiling water and boil it till al-dente.

How to Know Pasta is Done/ Boiled?

Boil some water. Add some salt and some olive oil. Add pasta to the boiling water. the moment the pasta starts floating on the surface, it means the pasta is done. The fresh pasta takes very less time to get boiled.

How to Check if the Pasta is Al-Denté?

When the pasta is boiling, take a small piece and eat, if the pasta gets stuck on your teeth, it means it is Al-Denté.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Flour (whole wheat/ All Purpose Flour)

  • 1/4 tsp Salt

  • 1 tbsp Oil

  • 1 Egg

Directions

  • Mix Flour and Salt in a bowl.
  • Make a well, and add an egg and olive oil.
  • Start mixing with fork.
  • Once mixed, start kneading with hand into a stiff dough.
  • If needed add a splash of water. But do not add too much water as it will make the dough soft.
  • Once kneaded into a stiff dough, cover it with clean wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • ROll it into sheets and start forming shapes of the pasta.
