Variations to Chocolate Cookies
- Flour: The All purpose flour can be replaced with wheat flour. The taste might vary a bit but it will still taste great.
- Sugar: Coconut sugar is a great substitute for brown sugar.
- Chocolate: If you want the bitterness to the cookies, you can use dark chocolate, or even a little (1 tsp) cocoa powder.
- Eggs: One can make them without eggs. The only difference is it will be too crumbly. Eggs add softness to the cookies.
- Toppings: Another great way to change the taste is my adding toppings to the chocolate cookies. These toppings can be chocolate chips, almond flakes or chocolate flakes as well. These are added right before the chocolate cookies are put in the oven for baking.
Step-by-step process with photos
Mix the dry ingredients together and keep them aside. Mix the butter and chocolate together. Mix the egg and sugar together. While mixing the wet ingredients, beat with an electric beater.
Add vanilla extract and mix everything together in a cookie dough. Place small balls on a baking tray leaving 2 inches space for the cookies to expand and shape them. Bake at 180’C for 12 minutes. Cool them on a wire rack and voila!
Tips to make the best chocolate cookies
- Baking: Do not open the oven in between while baking before the mentioned time is up. This would lead to a heat loss and thus take more time to bake and the baking will be uneven.
- Cooling: After the mentioned time, the cookies would be just done or at some places you might find it still is soft. Do not worry. Take the cookie out on a wire mesh and cool them to room temperature. Do not leave the cookies on the baking tray to cool as they might get overcooked.
- Shape: You can shape the cookies in any shape. But if the shape has corners, then the cookie might not look the same after baking as the chocolate cookies expand while baking. Thus the round shape is the safest.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I make my chocolate cookies more chewy?
Do not add egg white, just the egg yolk. Infact, add an additional egg yolk to the dough. Egg yolk add the moistness to the cookies thus making them more chewy.
Why Are my Chocolate Cookies flat and greasy?
Adding too much butter can make the cookies flat. Also not baking at the right temperature can also lead to flat cookies.
How long does it take to cool the cookies?
Ideally the chocolate cookies should be cooled until room temperature. But cooling them for 3-5 minutes should be a good enough time. Cool the cookies till they are not soft anymore.
